The President of the Andalusian Regional Government, José Antonio Griñán, has paid a visit to the PITA main building and business centre – Pitágoras. The works on this structure are in their final phase and represent a total investment of 14.5 million euros. President Griñán stated, “We must support growth based on research and development, and I believe that PITA embodies just that.”

“The Almería Science and Technology Park, is perhaps one of the key business centres that will boost the innovation, technology transfer, and knowledge coming out of the Province of Almería and Andalusia as well. I believe this park also serves as an example to once again state, during times like these when the looming threat of a new economic recession seems to be strangling all activities, two ideas prove crucial: fiscal consolidation is not enough, it must be achieved but is not the only answer; second, if we stimulate the economy, we must do so with enough good sense to ensure that what we do will have its rewards in the future,” stated Mr. Griñán at the PITA main building. He also emphasized that it is time to back both a new model for growth and a new approach towards economic activity based on research, development, and innovation; in which equal opportunity is fundamental. “I believe that PITA embodies just that,” he added.

The Andalusian president, after having toured the facilities with PITA Managing Director Alfredo Sánchez, offered some data related to the new building. “The Pitágoras building is the product of 14.5 million euros worth of investments and will be the nucleus for knowledge, knowledge transfer, and innovative business in Almería. It boasts 15,000 square metres of space, 11 laboratories, a training room, offices... There have already been eight requests for admission, seven companies and one private entity that will support business development. This building also represents a step towards creating a strategy for a sustainable economy.”

The Almería Science and Technology Park (PITA) begins the new year by announcing the inauguration of its main building and technology transfer centre, baptized ‘Pitágoras.’ The building is located in the brand-new Almería Technology Park in the municipality of El Alquián, and its facilities include office and laboratory spaces that are already available to entrepreneurs, small and medium enterprises, and large companies.

The name given to the building in Spanish - Pitágoras - pays homage to the Greek philosopher and mathematician Pythagoras, while not forgetting the Almería Science and Technology Park commercial name - PITA. At the same time, it combines the noun ‘agora’, in clear reference to a place of commercial and social congregation in ancient Greece, and the name of the meeting point that is the Almería technopolis. This building brings together architectural characteristics and technological and environmental features specifically designed to create a setting for business cooperation, with state-of-the-art offices boasting the very best in equipment and services.

´Pitágoras´ offers entrepreneurs maximum flexibility that adapts to their needs. Options available include coworking-based individual work spaces for start-up businesses that cost 125 € a month and 20 m2 office modules that can be combined to create any office size required. The advanced services provided to these facilities are unmatched: fibre optic networks, auditorium with 240 seats, different sized meeting rooms, central reception service, indoor and outdoor security systems, business support services, and 24-hour access 365 days a year.

The Regional Minister of Economy, Innovation and Science, and PITA President, Antonio Ávila, presided over a meeting today of the Almería Science and Technology Park Executive Committee (PITA). At this time, the request by Grupo Cajamar to acquire two plots in the complex was approved. On this land it intends to build a technological and advanced services centre.

Ávila pointed out that this centre, where about 400 people will be working, represents a boost to the immediate future of the park, primarily because of its scope, quality and the confidence demonstrated by its developer. This banking institution had requested the purchase of two plots with a combined buildable land area of 11,400 m2: SCO 1-1 and SCO 1-2, located in the Park’s Avenida de la Innovación.

This future Cajamar building will be home to companies funded by the entity as well as its own technological and advanced services centre, in addition to a 2-floor underground car park.

The banking institution has plans to construct a modern building with some of the most demanding specifications for sustainability, which will be in keeping with the new economic and environmental standard promoted in Andalusia.

Situación actual del Parque Park’s current status

The minister took the opportunity to also reiterate the Andalusian government’s commitment to PITA, which is visible in the 7.6 million euros in basic financing that the Regional Ministry of Economy has allocated towards the project so far.

Established in May 2002, PITA currently has two locations: the park itself and its Science Centre, located on Almería University Campus.

The urbanization of the park and all necessary infrastructure works have now finished. This project saw the investment of 34 million euros and now boasts a total of 368,000 m2 of buildable land which is divided into plots for sale.

In addition, there are currently 3 buildings in construction at the park location: the Research and Technology Transfer Centre, the Agricultural Service Industry Technology Centre and the Bioclinical Lab Research Centre.

The Research and Technology Transfer Centre is the main building. It will provide general services to entities that establish operations at the park as well as house companies and organisations that are based on innovation and business development. The building has a total surface area of 10,500 m2 above ground and two additional floors for parking underground.

The Agricultural Service Industry Technology Centre, promoted by the Foundation for Agricultural Service Technologies (TECNOVA), will boast 3,500 m2 of buildable area and it will be home to the R+D+i projects of companies from the agricultural service industry sector.

Finally, also in construction is the Bioclinical Lab Research Centre (LAB), with a total buildable area of 1,700 m2 and the first building at the park financed by a private company. LAB is a technology-based company specialized in agronomic analysis, biosafety, food safety and R+D services. It is currently located at the PITA Science Centre and plans to move all of its operations into the new building.

RealTrack Systems, a PITA collaborating company, has participated in a business tour organized by ICEX, along with StepOne, to Silicon Valley-San Francisco and Seattle. From its long journey around the United States, the Almería-based company brings back some “good opportunities,” as stated its manager, Isabel Pérez.

Following the tour of Silicon Valley and Seattle, RealTracks now has new prospects in the pipeline. “This week has put us back in the game and made us aware of just how many opportunities are offered by the micro/macro environment that is Silicon Valley, a place where doing business on a large scale is relatively easy and investors are excited to see new projects and ideas,” explained Isabel Pérez.
